First-Year Reads Program: “This, I Believe” Contest

JWU’s First-Year Reads program allows incoming students the opportunity to share a common academic experience as they begin their important work in the Arts & Sciences Core curriculum. Essays in the style of the iconic series “This, I Believe,” will be required readings for English Composition (ENG1020 or ENG1024). There will be a campuswide contest, which will culminate in three finalists being chosen to read their pieces during Homecoming & Family Weekend, October 18-20. Students not taking ENG1020 or ENG1024 (e.g.,transfer students with appropriate credit) will not be required to complete the readings. View readings.

In week one, students will receive the “This, I Believe” readings, and by week three, students will complete their essays. Students may choose whether they would like to submit their essays to the campuswide contest. Members of the selection committee will work with the finalists between weeks four and six to help revise the essays and prepare them for delivery in October.
