Athletic trainers play a pivotal role in not only getting student-athletes back on the field, but also with preventative measures that help the 23 Johnson & Wales University varsity teams perform at their peak. The JWU staff was recognized by its peers for its hard work and dedication with the 2019 GNAC Athletic Training Staff of the Year award as announced by conference commissioner Joe Walsh.
The award is voted on by the athletic trainers at the 13 core GNAC institutions. This was the inaugural Staff of the Year Award. Director of Sports Medicine Alan Segee won the Athletic Trainer of the Year award in 2009. Segee shares the award with athletic trainers Jillian Withington, Brett Mastropoll and Tim O'Brien.
Segee has been with the Wildcats since 1999 after a two-year stint at Providence College. A 1993 Rhode Island College graduate, he works with the JWU volleyball and basketball programs as well as baseball and club sports. Segee received his master's degree from Cleveland State in 1995.
