In addition to succeeding in the classroom and on the field, Johnson & Wales University Athletics has always been good stewards of the community. Over the next two weekends, the JWU softball and women's lacrosse teams will hold events to benefit a pair of local organizations.
Continuing the strong relationship the athletics department has developed with the Tomorrow Fund, the softball team will hold their annual Swinging for Tomorrow Home Run Derby on Saturday, October 13, from 10am-noon at the JWU softball field on the Harborside Campus.
Each contestant will get 10 swings for $5 dollars and accumulate points for every swing (even if it is not a home run). To sign up for a time slot in advance, email JWU student athlete Brenna DuPerry. Anyone who can't participate but wants to donate can do so online. The team wants to match the $1,000 it raised last year.
On October 20, the women's lacrosse team will host its fall play date with Bridgewater State, Curry, UMass Dartmouth and Regis. That day, the Wildcats are also hosting a Thanksgiving can drive to benefit the Rhode Island Food Bank.
The team is accepting all non-perishable goods, which can be brought to the field on October 20 or beforehand to Head Coach Jessica Scannapieco's office in the Wildcat Center.
