Vortex Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror Film Festival and “Nosferatu” Screenings at JWU

JWU is working with Flickers Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) to host screenings for their fall sidebar festival, the Vortex Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror Film Fest. The University Involvement Board (UIB) is sponsoring two of the screenings, one of which is an extra special event:

SCREENING OF F.W. MURNAU’S “NOSFERATU” On Friday, October 25, a screening of the 1922 silent classic “Nosferatu” with live accompaniment and original score by Dave Tessier will be held in Schneider Auditorium at 7pm.

ABOUT THE FILM: An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, “Nosferatu” is the quintessential silent vampire film, crafted by legendary German director F. W. Murnau (Sunrise, Faust, The Last Laugh). Rather than depicting Dracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau's Graf Orlok (as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws -- perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism yet envisioned.

ABOUT THE MUSIC: David Tessier is a critically acclaimed actor/composer from RI, active in the RI arts community for the last three decades. He is the music director for King Richard’s Faire and is the founder and leader of the “All-Star Band of All-Star Stars,” a musical collective created to perform pieces and works from Jesus Christ Superstar to the Monkees.

TICKETS are free and can be obtained on JWU’s ticketing site. Faculty, staff and students with access to jwuLink can log in, and click on “Get Tickets” from the news page. Staff without access to jwuLink can go to jwu.universitytickets.com, and register as “General Public” to get your free passes.

Additional film screenings will be held in the Center for Media Production. These screenings are also FREE for all JWU students, faculty and staff.

Making Votes Count: Secretary of State Gorbea Talks Election Security

Making Votes Count: Secretary of State Gorbea Talks Election Security

Election security is a complex issue — and as the 2020 election cycle revs up, a crucial one to understand from multiple angles. To help his students grasp the big picture, Assistant Professor Kevin DeJesus, Ph.D., invited Rhode Island Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea to speak to Political Science and Criminal Justice students about statewide efforts to ensure safe, confidential voting — particularly in the face of emerging cyber security threats.

JWU’s Health Plans: There’s More Than Meets the Eye

Choosing a health insurance plan isn’t just about the plan itself; it’s about the other benefits that go along with it, too. At JWU, there are also a Health Savings Account (HSA) and a Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA) to think about as you’re considering changes for the new year.

Log in to HRpulse for full details about the advantages the HCFSA and the HSA have to offer.

United Way and Workplace Giving

The active participation of the JWU community in the university’s past workplace giving campaigns reflects the true caring and generous nature of our staff and faculty. In the continued spirit of such charitable workplace giving, JWU has launched its annual United Way Campaign. Beginning October 15, 2019, you may submit your United Way pledge through JWU’s United Way e-Pledge Campaign.
